Francis Gary Powers
Francis Gary Powers (1929-1977) was an American Air Force pilot and CIA operative best known for piloting the U-2 spy plane. Powers served as a military fighter pilot with the F-84 program from 1950 to 1956, then transitioned to the CIA's U-2 reconnaissance program between 1956 and 1960. He received training at Area 51 in Nevada under U-2 designer Kelly Johnson and chief test pilot Tony LeVier. On May 1, 1960, Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union, captured, and later exchanged for Soviet spy Rudolf Abel in February 1962. After his release, he worked as a test pilot for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. While Powers' primary significance relates to Cold War espionage rather than UAP research, his U-2 missions and Area 51 involvement have been referenced in UFO folklore discussions regarding the origins of UFO sightings during the 1950s-1960s.
