Freeman Dyson
Freeman Dyson (1923-2020) was a British-American theoretical physicist renowned for his contributions to quantum electrodynamics, astrophysics, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). A professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, he proposed the 'Dyson sphere' in his 1960 Science paper 'Search for Artificial Stellar Sources of Infrared Radiation,' suggesting advanced alien civilizations would emit detectable infrared waste heat from star-encompassing megastructures. This idea influenced SETI, inspiring searches like the 2015 Tabby's Star investigation. Dyson supported radio SETI, collaborating with Philip Morrison and Giuseppe Cocconi on listening for alien signals, and advocated searches yielding valuable results even without detections—his 'First Law of SETI'.
