Herbert Scoville Jr.
Herbert Scoville Jr. (1915-1993) was an American intelligence officer and scientist who served as Assistant Director of the CIA's Office of Scientific Intelligence (OSI). In this role, he contributed to early U.S. government investigations of UFOs during the Cold War era. Notably, in 1952, following interviews with witness groups regarding sightings potentially indicating Soviet saucer-like aircraft, Scoville concluded the objects were likely normal jet aircraft in steep climbs, dismissing exotic explanations. He recalled in later interviews that CIA monitored UFO reports primarily due to concerns over foreign technology or hoaxes fueling public interest, rather than confirming extraterrestrial origins. Scoville's assessments helped shape agency skepticism toward UFO phenomena as national security threats. No known publications or congressional testimony by him on UFOs exist in declassified records.
