Former U.S. Senator Richard B. Russell observed two unidentified aerial objects while traveling by train near Baku in the Soviet Union during October 1955. While journeying by rail approximately ninety minutes outside Baku in the Azerbaijani Soviet Socialist Republic, Senator Richard B. Russell witnessed an extraordinary aerial phenomenon. He observed a greenish-yellow spherical object rising rapidly from the horizon, which he immediately identified as a flying disc. Alerting his companions, the group subsequently witnessed a second identical object performing a similar rapid ascent.
The objects appeared at considerable altitude without reference points for size estimation. They exhibited a distinct whirling motion while maintaining a steady trajectory. Notably, the craft emitted no artificial illumination, only a diffuse yellowish glow. The observation occurred during a train journey specifically requested by the Senator, countering theories of a staged demonstration.
CIA Assistant Director Herbert Scoville Jr. documented the account following an interview conducted on October 27, 1955. Scoville concluded that the sighting did not indicate Soviet development of unconventional aircraft, instead suggesting conventional jet exhaust as a possible explanation. However, the detailed testimony from multiple witnesses, including scientific intelligence consultants, left the true nature of the objects unresolved.
