Senator Russell

Richard Brevard Russell Jr. (1897-1971) was an American politician from Georgia, serving as a U.S. Senator from 1933 to 1971 and chairman of the Armed Services Committee. In October 1955, while traveling by train in the Soviet Union, Russell and his staff reported sighting unusual disc-shaped objects maneuvering at high speed, prompting him to demand a U.S. Air Force investigation into UFOs. He expressed frustration over government secrecy, stating in a 1956 letter that UFOs should be studied openly to avoid public panic. CIA analysis dismissed the sighting as probable jet aircraft, but Russell's advocacy highlighted early congressional interest in UFO phenomena amid Cold War tensions.
