Leo Howard Mersey
Leo Howard Mersey, a Canadian fishing vessel captain from Nova Scotia, is known for his eyewitness account in the 1967 Shag Harbour UFO incident. On October 4, aboard the MV Nickerson near Sambro, he detected four stationary blips on his Decca radar, approximately 28 km away. Looking out, he and his crew of nearly 20 fishermen observed four bright lights in a rectangular formation in the northeastern sky. Mersey radioed the rescue coordination centre and Halifax harbour master for explanation, then filed a detailed report with the Lunenburg RCMP upon return to port. His radar-confirmed sighting adds credibility to the event, which involved multiple witnesses, official responses from RCMP, Canadian military, and U.S. Condon Committee interest.
