Lieutenant General John N.T. \"Jack\" Shanahan, United States Air Force (retired), is an American military officer who served from 1984 to 2020, commissioned via ROTC at the University of Michigan with a B.S. in chemistry. Rising to lieutenant general, he commanded at squadron, group, wing, agency, and numbered air force levels, including the 55th Wing, 505th Command and Control Wing, Air Force ISR Agency, and 25th Air Force. Key roles included Director for Defense Intelligence (Warfighter Support) and Deputy Director for Global Operations on the Joint Staff. Shanahan pioneered AI in defense as founding Director of Project Maven (Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Functional Team), advancing AI for intelligence analysis, and as inaugural Director of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC), integrating AI across DoD. No known direct involvement in UAP/UFO research or programs. Post-retirement, he is an adjunct senior fellow at CNAS and serves on AI-related committees.
