Michael D. Swords is a retired American professor of Natural Science at Western Michigan University, specializing in human biology, history and philosophy of science, and anomalous phenomena including UFOs. He earned an M.S. in Biochemistry from Iowa State University (1965) and a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University (1972), winning the University's Teaching Excellence Award in 1978. A key figure in ufology, Swords edited The Journal of UFO Studies for CUFOS and served as consultant for MUFON, APRO, and others, while being a board member of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies. His notable publications include Grass Roots UFOs (2005), exploring John P. Timmerman's files, and UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry (2012), co-authored with the UFO History Group, detailing U.S. and other governments' serious military and intelligence responses to UFOs as national security matters using declassified documents. He presented at MUFON symposia, abduction conferences, and SSE meetings.
