Steven H. Schiff (1941-2000) was an American politician serving as U.S. Representative for New Mexico's 1st congressional district from 1989 until his death. A Republican and former district attorney, he is noted in UAP/UFO history for initiating official inquiries into the 1947 Roswell incident due to persistent UFO sightings in his state. In 1993, Schiff requested the Department of Defense to investigate Roswell records. This prompted the General Accounting Office (GAO) to conduct a 1994 audit, culminating in a July 1995 GAO report detailing searches across agencies, which found no evidence of extraterrestrial involvement or withheld documents beyond standard procedures. The Air Force later issued reports linking Roswell debris to Project Mogul, a classified balloon program. Schiff's efforts highlighted government transparency issues in UFO matters, though no new revelations emerged. He passed away from skin cancer in 2000.
