Pascagoula Abduction
On the evening of October 11, 1973, shipyard workers Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker reported being taken aboard a luminous craft by humanoid beings while fishing on the Pascagoula River in Mississippi. Both men passed polygraph and hypnosis tests, and their case became one of the most widely discussed alleged abductions in UFO history.

Background
On the evening of October 11, 1973, Charles Hickson (42) and Calvin Parker (19), both employed at a local shipyard, were fishing from an old pier on the west bank of the Pascagoula River when they reported seeing a glowing, elongated craft hovering nearby.
The Incident
According to their account, three beings roughly five feet tall β with wrinkled grey skin, no discernible eyes, and claw-like appendages β floated toward them and carried them inside the craft. The witnesses described:
- An oval-shaped craft approximately 30-40 feet across and 8-10 feet high
- Three robotic humanoids with grey, wrinkled skin and bullet-shaped heads
- Crab-like pincers and slit-shaped mouths
- The ability to levitate and hover above the ground
Hickson described being examined by a device resembling a large eye that moved across his body. Parker reportedly fainted from shock and remained unconscious during the examination. The entire encounter lasted approximately 20 minutes.
Immediate Response
After the encounter, both men immediately contacted the Jackson County Sheriff's office. Investigators left the two alone in a room with a hidden recorder; the tape showed them continuing to discuss the event in distressed tones rather than coordinating a hoax.
Hickson later passed a polygraph administered by a former FBI polygrapher. Both men were examined at Keesler Air Force Base and cleared of radiation exposure. The story was picked up by the Associated Press and United Press International, receiving nationwide coverage.
Credibility and Analysis
Despite persistent skepticism β critics have pointed to alcohol consumption and a possible psychological contagion between the two men β the Pascagoula case is distinguished by several factors:
- The speed of reporting to authorities
- The recorded private conversation showing genuine distress
- The consistency of both men's accounts over decades
- Dr. J. Allen Hynek, Professor of Astronomy at Northwestern University, concluded: "There is no question in my mind that these men have had a very real, frightening experience."
Hickson went on to become a UFO celebrity, alleging ongoing contact with the beings and appearing on national television. Parker maintained his account throughout his life until his death on August 24, 2023.
Significance
The Pascagoula abduction stands among the most compelling close encounter cases due to the witnesses' unwavering consistency under extreme scrutiny. A secretly recorded conversation between Hickson and Parker, made when they believed they were alone, revealed genuine distress rather than fabrication. Law enforcement took the report seriously, and both men maintained their accounts without significant deviation for the rest of their lives.
