Background

Hours after submitting his resignation letter addressed to Secretary Mattis, Elizondo received a call from Garry Reid, his top boss at OUSD(I) who had been deliberately kept out of the loop on AATIP. Reid was furious about the letter and implied threats to Elizondo's security clearance and career.

Reid subsequently launched an inquiry with AFOSI (Air Force Office of Special Investigations), seized Elizondo's computers and files, and questioned his employees and associates. This marked the beginning of a sustained institutional retaliation campaign against Elizondo.

Significance

Documents the beginning of institutional retaliation against Elizondo, which would persist for years.
