Background

The Direccion General de Aeronautica Civil (DGAC) is Chile's Ministerial Department of Civil Aeronautics, equivalent to the US FAA. It manages national airspace and ensures the safety of all civil, military, and commercial air operations.

UAP Involvement

The DGAC has been involved in UAP matters since the late 1990s.

  • In March/April 1997, DGAC issued a public statement acknowledging UFO sightings over Arica - the first time the Chilean government publicly recognized unidentified objects in national airspace
  • DGAC Director General Gonzalo Miranda ordered the creation of CEFAA in October 1997
  • CEFAA operates under DGAC's direct oversight
