The Comité de Estudios de Fenómenos Aéreos Anómalos (CEFAA), founded in 1997, is a government organization in Chile under the Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC), which depends on the Chilean Air Force. It investigates anomalous aerial phenomena (UAP/UFOs) reported by pilots, civil aviators, the public, and military personnel to ensure aviation safety across Chile's vast airspace of 32 million square kilometers. Key activities include receiving case reports, conducting interdisciplinary analyses, generating scientific reports, and educating the public on sightings. Notable achievements encompass detailed studies of high-profile incidents, such as pilot audio recordings of unexplained lights, often attributing them to conventional explanations like military maneuvers while acknowledging unresolved cases. Initially preceded by SEFAA around 1968, CEFAA formalized UFO research. It remains active as SEFAA today, prioritizing airspace security.
