Ground Saucer Watch (GSW) was a United States civilian UFO research organisation founded in 1972 by William Spaulding in Phoenix, Arizona. GSW focused on the scientific analysis of UFO photographs using computer-assisted image-enhancement techniques, and gained national attention through Freedom of Information Act lawsuits against US intelligence agencies.

Significance

GSW's pioneering FOIA litigation — Ground Saucer Watch v. CIA (1977-1980) — resulted in the release of more than 900 pages of CIA UFO documents, setting a precedent for subsequent civilian-organisation access to US government UFO records. The case and its documents were heavily drawn on by later researchers, including Dan Wright in The CIA UFO Papers (2019).

Photo Analysis

GSW's image-enhancement work produced analyses of well-known photographs including the Rex Heflin Santa Ana photos, the McMinnville photos, and the Gemini 11 astronaut photos. While some of GSW's conclusions were later challenged, its computer-driven methodology anticipated modern forensic photogrammetry. The organisation largely dissolved in the late 1980s but its archival work remains a primary source in US UAP historiography.
