Soviet Military Investigation Unit

The Soviet Military Investigation Unit was the internal investigative body of the Soviet Ministry of Defence responsible for following up anomalous-aerial-phenomenon incidents involving Soviet Armed Forces, particularly around missile complexes, airbases, and naval facilities. Its work overlapped substantially with the SETKA programme (1978-1996), which was run jointly with the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Operational Record

The unit investigated multiple high-profile Soviet UAP cases, including the Soviet Karelia incident near Viborg where military guards discovered a shuttle-shaped craft, the Ukraine ICBM Base (Byelokoroviche) launch-sequence activation by a giant UFO, the associated Sokolov case, and the Kapustin Yar rocket-range green elliptical hovering object. These investigations typically involved field interviews of military witnesses, radar-tape analysis, and site inspection. Findings were forwarded to the General Staff and, when strategic weapons were affected, to the Soviet political leadership.

Successor Role

After 1991, some investigative responsibilities passed to the Russian Ministry of Defence's research establishments. Fragmentary records have surfaced through researchers Vladimir Azhazha, Paul Stonehill, and Nick Redfern. The unit's methodology is a primary historical counterpart to US Project Blue Book and later AATIP operations.
