Fife Symington III is a two-term Republican governor of Arizona (1991–1997), Harvard graduate, decorated Air Force Vietnam veteran and experienced pilot, and great-grandson of industrialist Henry Clay Frick. On 13 March 1997 he personally witnessed the Phoenix Lights — a massive, delta-shaped craft near Squaw Peak. To defuse public hysteria he staged a press conference shortly afterwards with an alien costume, but in 2007 he publicly confirmed his sighting and called for an official investigation.

  • In 2007 publicly confirmed his own sighting and called for an official investigation
  • Barry Goldwater served as campaign chairman for both of his gubernatorial runs

Symington's significance for the UAP timeline lies in an unusual profile: a sitting governor as eyewitness to a major event, who first reached for the satire weapon and only a decade later released the truth. That tension — political necessity of denial versus personal witness — is a key motif of many later disclosure biographies and makes Symington a textbook example of how the institutions handle sightings while in office.
