Background

In July 2022, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) was announced as the new permanent UAP office, replacing the short-lived AOIMSG. Unlike its predecessor, AARO had to report directly to Congress.

The name change from "aerial" to "anomalous" reflected Congress's expanded definition to include space and undersea anomalies โ€” acknowledging transmedium capabilities that had been documented since the Nimitz encounter.

Significance

Established the first permanent all-domain anomaly investigation office, with Congressional reporting requirements and expanded scope.
