Background
In July 2022, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) began operations, succeeding the UAPTF. Unlike its predecessor, AARO investigates anomalous phenomena across all domains rather than airspace alone.
Organizational Structure
AARO was placed under the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security and granted authority to access all intelligence data across the defense establishment.
Scope of Investigation
AARO covers anomalous phenomena in multiple domains:
- Air
- Sea
- Space
- Land
Landmark Report
In March 2024, the office published a significant report with findings that triggered widespread reaction:
- Found no evidence of extraterrestrial technology
- Generated both relief and fierce criticism from various stakeholders
Significance
AARO's creation established the first permanent institutional infrastructure for UAP investigation within the Department of Defense. Unlike its predecessors β temporary task forces with limited mandates β AARO received dedicated funding, Congressional reporting requirements, and a formal mechanism for military personnel to submit encounters without career risk. It represented the transition from reactive inquiry to proactive institutional oversight.
